Unconscious bias happens to many of us. But, does age-old experience get in the way of securing your Mr or Mrs Right? Here’s why you need over 55’s on your payroll.

Anyone in the business knows that recruiting takes time and money. Creating a position description and job advertisement, marketing the position, fielding through applications, responding to ads, rolling out interviews, and often negotiating a salary. The process is involved.

Finally, when the perfect candidate is snagged they start on-the-job training and orientation, then eventually their first performance appraisal… and so on.

Recruitment of the ideal employee can be a tough gig. Unfortunately, we see many businesses go around in circles as they end up with the wrong candidate time and time again. But where are they going wrong?

The simple answer is no. If you are a business who relies on a steady workforce dedicated to the job at hand, then read on. If you need employees who are happy to hold the corporate ladder rather than scurry to climb it, here is your solution – employees over 55!

Older does not mean redundant. Here is how you can capitalise on over 55’s in your workplace.

Dedication and commitment

Many older employees are in a position where they can offer full commitment to their job. This is often a time in life where children have moved out and they don’t have extra curricula responsibilities looming.

These employees generally see no hurried reason to climb that invisible ladder; after all many of them have already enjoyed that ride. They would rather invest effort into getting the job at hand perfected.

Mature employees understand the true value of hard work and focus. They are often very good at on-the-spot troubleshooting due to their previous experience. And if something is more complex they have no hesitation asking for help.

Mentorship and increased productivity

Mature aged employees are generally very good at mentoring younger or less-experienced peers. They have built bridges and seen them fall. They have industry connections and life experience that is more valuable than often given credit for. On the flip side, younger employees are typically more adept at current trends and technology.

A healthy balance of both demographics encourages workplace diversity and sharing of knowledge. One generation mentors the other. This leads to increased productivity and a happier, healthier workplace. You can’t achieve this arrangement without older employees in your business.

Maturity and a steady head

Age is the simple factor here. Maturity comes from life and years of experience. When the going gets tough you generally get more balance from someone who has been there before. Mature workers are prone to handling a situation without being as “rattled” as someone half their age. They tend to communicate openly approaching situations with focus and detail rather than sweating the small stuff.
