Having a well-written, professional resume is extremely important. Your resume is the first impression you get to make and is the most important tool that you have to impress your potential employer.

Whether you’ve got years of experience or are newly joining the workforce, your chance of securing an interview is much more likely if you have an attractive resume to show your skills, experience and education.

The following tips will help you increase your chances of securing an interview.

Tailor your resume

The greatest tip when preparing to write a resume is to carefully read the job that you are intending to apply for. Add keywords in your resume that appear in the job description and outline the specific duties and responsibilities that relate to the job ad.

Make it simple and easy to read

Employers usually have a minimal amount of time to review your resume, therefore, readability is key. Avoid long paragraphs and try to streamline your resume to outline only the most important aspects that you would like to address.

Make it brief

Under each role you have listen, include a section that highlights your responsibilities during your time in the role. This section should be dot points that are clear and specific. It is also helpful to state the systems that you have used.

State important achievements

You may consider including a separate “Achievements” section under a role to specifically highlight relevant achievements during your time in the role.

Use a professional font

Your resume should be clear, professional and as easy to read as possible. You should use a basic, clean font (Arial for example). Also incorporate bold font for your headings to make it more readable.

Only include necessary and clear headings

This may differ depending on different professions, industries etc. however, the most important sections that should appear on your resume are often the following:

  • Summary
  • Skills and abilities
  • Work experience
  • Education
  • References

Proofread, proofread, proofread

Make sure your resume is free from typos and errors.
