Your appearance for a job interview is extremely important, please don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. It is imperative to make a good first impression, and this can be achieved during the initial moments of meeting by portraying you have made an effort with your appearance.  Although it is important to choose wisely when deciding on attire, there are also a number of other aspects concerning appearance that are just as crucial.

Take note of the points below when getting ready for your next interview.
(The culture of the company you are being interviewed for should be considered when dressing for an interview as both formal and casual options are listed below.)

WOMEN

Attire:

  • Quality black dress pants: It is important that they fit well, they shouldn’t be too long and dragging on the floor collecting dust, too big so that you are constantly hiking them back up or obscenely tight. With dress pants you have the option to dress them up or down depending on the environment of the interview. If you are applying for a corporate role, they can be worn with a button up shirt and blazer, otherwise a nice blouse is the other option.
  • Knee-length black corporate skirt, this as well can work with a button down shirt or blouse.
  • A knee-length black dress. Simple, tasteful and corporate should be what you are looking for when wearing a dress to a job interview. It is not a time to experiment with neckline or hemlines, as these should both be conservative for this instance.
  • All outfits can be complimented with a pair of low black heels or black ballet flats.

Appearance:

  • Personal hygiene is the most important aspect above all.
  • All items of clothing should be clean, ironed and without holes or tears.
  • Shoes should be polished.
  • Limited jewellery should be worn.
  • Hair should be clean and tied back in neat, professional hairstyle.
  • If wearing a skirt or dress, tan or light hosiery should be considered.
  • Make up should be simple and professional (don’t go over the top).
  • Perfume should be worn, but refrain from drowning oneself in it.
  • Nails should be clean and neat looking.
  • Breath should be fresh.
