Starting a new job can be scary, especially with new people, in a new place with different ways of doing things. It’s not something we can avoid in our lifetime and for some it can be daunting. I myself have recently gone through the same process of starting a new job simply to further my career. Needless to say it wasn’t the easiest and smoothest transition and first few weeks like I thought it would be. There were a lot of things I didn’t think would change and there were a few emotional ups and tides that came with starting a new job.
It’s been a month and half now and needless to say I’m still settling in and getting back into a routine. So for those who have just started a new job or anyone wanting some tips on how to feel more settled at work then this is for you, or if you simply want a quick read:
Be brave and introduce yourself – whether it’s in the kitchen or in the elevator
Smile and be genuine – it’s the universal language. Great for first impressions and makes you more welcoming and approachable
Ask questions (even the dumb ones) – and don’t stop. Use the opportunity as a newbie to find out as much as you can.
Actively listen and remember names – we have two ears and one mouth so that we can listen twice as much as we speak
Get involved and genuinely get to know everyone and the company – join in on team discussions and company activities.
Remember that things take time and don’t be hard too on yourself – believe it or not you will eventually get the hang of your new job. It takes a minimum of 3 months to a year to be fully settled into their new job
Relax and take some time out to breathe and self-reflect – starting a new job can be an overwhelming process, so it’s important to make sure that YOU feel OK.
