My Personal Trainer asked me the other day, “So, where do you see yourself in five years?” I honestly couldn’t answer him. It’s not something I have put a lot of thought into lately, however for people who know me quite well this would be a huge surprise given how planned and organised my life has always been. But it had me thinking….. Where on earth will I be in five years?

I have always been organised and goal driven when it comes to both my personal life and career but this year I have found myself swimming rudderless. This conversation with my PT made me question a couple of things; is it goalstime I reassessed my career, my personal life and my goals? Was it time I did a full assessment on what really makes me happy and create some goals around that? Clearly I had to start with my career.

I have now been working at Optimum Recruitment coming on seven years, and over that time my position and role has changed and grown in many different ways… was it just that I was approaching the 7 year itch? Or was it time to grow and expand my role again to incorporate new challenges? Lucky for me my boss is very good at reading people and picked up on it several weeks before I did and started “laying bread crumbs” so I could come to the proper conclusion on my own.

For me this required making some changes to my role, giving more responsibilities to my team members and taking the step to learn more about business management and even participate in more business meetings to help better sell our corporate services! It is all very new and sometimes confusing to me, but a challenge I look forward to. I feel completely out of my comfort zone at times, but I know my boss wouldn’t have given me this challenge if he didn’t think I could meet it.

I think it’s good for all of us to have some form of goals in life, whether they are for work or personal, otherwise what is going to push us to succeed? How do we know when we have accomplished something special? Goals are there to motivate, drive and focus us.

So, are you currently feeling like me and a little “rudderless”? Is it time for you to sit back and set some real goals for yourself? Where do you see yourself in five years? What goals do you need to set yourself to start you on your way? Sometimes the answers may be a little scary but isn’t that what goals are all about, realising what
