So far, the beginning of this year has been full of change for me. I have moved into a new soccer team; my partner has decided to progress with a new career; and last weekend, we moved into a new house. I do not mind change, however, if there are too many things changing in your life, it can be quite difficult to find a new rhythm. Luckily for me, the transition has been fairly smooth as I have had the support from people around me. In my opinion, there are two key benefits of change.

Change helps you grow.

Working in recruitment, one of the most common things I hear from candidates is that they are worried or scared of getting out of their comfort zone and going for that new job. What if it’s the wrong choice? What if it’s a bad decision?

It is no secret that people like to be secure. There is a certain element of fear surrounding losing their job and pursuing a career move in a different field or organisation. It is easy enough for me to tell people to “make that change” when it’s not my career on the line. However, sometimes you need that push and need to take a risk to benefit yourself in the long run.

My partner has recently made that call and decided to go back to University to study teaching. It was a tough call for her. She went from having a secure, full time job, to be a full time student again, and working part time. However, it made her realize, that it is actually what she wanted to do the whole time and this change has already had a positive change on her life.

Change teaches you to be flexible.

I love my routine. I have played soccer my whole life and, on the weekends, especially on game day, I have a set routine that I follow. This helps me clear my head and get prepared. This has worked for me my whole life. However, recently I have had to adapt as moving to a new house has drastically changed my routine. I have had to find a new way to prepare. Initially, I was worried. If I change things up will everything still work? Luckily, it did. I had to make a few compromises and be a bit more flexible. However, it showed me that there is more than one way to get things done.

All in all, I believe that without change, life would become repetitive and boring. Our lives are fueled by change so embrace it and enjoy the next journey.
