How are you going to keep moving forward

“We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing things, because we’re curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.” – Walt Disney

These are the wise words of Mr. Walt Disney. In order to continue moving forward and progressing, in order to accomplish new things and keep life exciting, we must adapt to the times and “keep moving forward”.

Not all of us want to build a theme park, and a castle, but what are you doing to keep moving down your path? Are you curious about what might be out there? And if the opportunity came up, are you prepared to go for it?

There are many things you can do that will prepare you to either enter the job market or reach that next step in the ladder.

Create your Personal Brand

Accurately representing yourself both personally and professionally will help you to catch the attention of those on the same path. But which path are you on?

To know where you are going, you first need to know where you have come from. Identify your personal strengths and weaknesses by asking yourself:

  • What motivates me?
  •  What do I enjoy doing?
  • What are the must haves from a role and organisation?
  • What areas do I know I need to work on?

If you are struggling to answer these questions, ask friends, family and co-workers how they would describe you. Once you are aware of your different characteristics you can work on how to best brand them.

Determine what you want to be known for

In addition to your personal brand, which is a reflection of who you are today, and identifies your existing skills and competencies, you need to assess your strengths and weaknesses as they relate to whichever industry or career you want to move into.

Uncovering your skills and traits that make you unique will help you stand out from the pack and what you need to work on in order to advance. Reviewing where you want to be in five or ten years, and what you want to be known for, can help you know which path to take.

Research your desired job & define your audience

Before you start on the journey of re-branding, you first need to decide who your audience is and what you are trying to achieve.

Understanding who you are telling your story to will help you to write it. Researching your desired job or organisation will help you to understand what they are looking for. Sign up to blogs, newsletters and podcasts. The more information you have the better prepared you will be.

Continually grow your brand

Your brand is something that grows with you. You should always be working on growing and reinventing your brand as you move down your path.

As you upskill or take a new direction, your brand needs to move with you. Reviewing the questions you asked when creating your personal brand will help you to keep moving forward in your journey and stay ahead in the job market.

Changing jobs, or going for that next step on the ladder can be overwhelming but it just takes one step on the path to start the journey. Where your path leads is up to you.
