Gold reached record highs in Australian dollars earlier this year. Copper is the metal the world’s energy transition cannot happen without. Both sectors are generating projects and roles — and the talent market has rarely been tighter
Two very different metals are driving one very strong hiring market. Australian gold hit a record of around AUD $7,700 per ounce in late January 2026. Prices have since eased back, trading nearer $6,000 by mid-July, but remain historically high, and the 2026 average has sat above $7,000. A gold price at this level does one thing to producers: it creates margin, and margin funds exploration, projects and, ultimately, jobs.
Copper tells a demand-led story. Australia’s copper export earnings are forecast to grow from $13 billion in 2024–25 to $17.6 billion by 2026–27, on the back of higher prices and rising export volumes (from 765 to 948 kilotonnes), according to the federal Resources and Energy Quarterly. Global copper demand for wiring, EVs, solar, grids and battery storage is the engine underneath it.
The Workforce Snapshot
The sector-wide numbers reinforce the point. Mining engineer roles are forecast to grow around 17.1 per cent over three years. Gold is now one of the strongest sources of new mining jobs in the pipeline — the AREEA outlook has gold and energy projects leading the sector’s 96-project, 22,000-job growth story to 2030. Seven gold projects alone, including Hemi and the KCGM expansion, are expected to need close to 1,700 new workers by the end of 2027. Across the board, geologists, metallurgists and process engineers are in a seller’s market right now.
Where the Gold Is
Western Australia remains the heartland. Northern Star’s Kalgoorlie Super Pit is the country’s largest open-cut gold mine and continues to expand, while Newmont’s Boddington is one of Australia’s largest operations. In the Pilbara, the Hemi Gold Project, acquired by Northern Star through its ~$5 billion purchase of De Grey Mining, is one of the largest undeveloped gold projects in a tier-one jurisdiction, with an 11.2-million-ounce resource and a plan to produce around 530,000 ounces a year for its first decade. Construction is advancing, with first gold targeted later this decade. Newmont’s Tanami in the NT and Agnico Eagle’s high-grade Fosterville in Victoria round out a genuinely national gold map.
Where the Copper Is
Queensland’s Mount Isa region is the centre of gravity. The federal and Queensland governments have committed up to $600 million to secure Glencore’s Mount Isa copper smelter and Townsville refinery — assets that provide around half of Australia’s copper smelting capacity — protecting hundreds of direct jobs. Nearby, Harmony Gold’s $2.3 billion Eva Copper Mine near Cloncurry is set to create up to 1,000 construction and 450 operational jobs, with contractors mobilising from early 2027.
South Australia adds serious weight: BHP’s Olympic Dam and the modern Carrapateena copper-gold-uranium mine are both active, with SA copper exports worth around $3.1 billion in 2025. In WA, Sandfire Resources rounds out the copper picture.
What It Pays
| Role | Salary range |
|---|---|
| Geologist (graduate – 3 yrs) | $78,000 – $100,000 |
| Geologist (5 – 8 yrs) | $120,000 – $150,000 |
| Metallurgist / process engineer | $130,000 – $160,000 |
| Senior mining engineer | $160,000 – $210,000 |
| Senior + site allowances | $180,000 – $225,000+ |
| FIFO package (all-in) | $165,000+ vs ~$130,000 metro |
These bands are consistent with 2026 salary guides. As in the wider sector, the FIFO premium is real once site-covered costs are accounted for.
What Is Driving Demand, and the Dual Talent Crisis
On the gold side, record prices are funding new exploration and fast-tracking stalled projects. On copper, the electrification numbers are stark: every EV needs roughly 83 kilograms of copper and every wind turbine around four tonnes, with world demand widely forecast to climb sharply through the next decade. Australia is positioned to supply it.
The constraint is talent, and it is structural rather than cyclical. Two crises are arriving together. A retirement wave is removing principal geologists, senior metallurgists and mine managers, and with them decades of site-specific knowledge, right now. At the same time, university geoscience enrolments have fallen sharply over the past decade, and the mid-career cohort that should be stepping into leadership simply does not exist in the numbers the industry needs, a legacy of reduced graduate intake through the lower-price 2010s.
What This Means for You
For candidates: experienced professionals are in the best negotiating position in a generation. Mid-career specialists are rarely moving laterally, the opportunity has to represent a clear step up in title, scope or package. Have a frank career conversation with a specialist before you engage, because counter-offers in this market are aggressive and often catch candidates unprepared.
For employers: speed wins. Time-to-fill for principal and senior technical roles is now measured in months, and six-round interview processes lose people mid-way to companies that move from first interview to verbal offer in under ten business days. Brief on the total package from the first call, advertise your roster structure up front, and build relationships before you need them, cold approaches to passive candidates in a hot market rarely land.
Gold and copper are pulling on the same shallow talent pool from opposite directions. For candidates and hiring managers alike, understanding that dynamic is the difference between winning and missing out in H2 2026.
