As I enter my 12th month and nearing the end of my first year in recruitment, upon reflection, I am filled with a mix of emotions – excitement, challenge, and most importantly, growth. I have learned so much and am grateful for the experiences that have shaped me into the recruiter I am today.
Through this reflection, I can draw upon several core learnings that I will take with me in the years to come and could be useful to those beginning their recruitment career.
One of the most important lessons I have learned is the importance of clear communication. In recruitment, it is crucial to ensure that both the employer and the candidate understand the job requirements and expectations. Miscommunication can lead to disappointment and wasted time for both parties.
Another important lesson I’ve learned is the importance of building relationships. Recruitment is a people-oriented business and building good relationships with both employers and candidates can lead to long-term success. I have found that by building trust and understanding with my clients, I am able to better understand their needs and find the right candidates for their open positions.
I have also come to appreciate the importance of flexibility and adaptability. The job market is constantly changing and as a recruiter it is important to be able to adapt to new trends and technologies. This requires staying up to date on industry developments and being willing to try new approaches when traditional methods are not working.
I have learned that understanding the industry you are recruiting for is crucial. Every industry is unique, and it is important to understand the specific requirements and expectations of the industry you are recruiting for. This knowledge allows you to better match the right candidates with the right jobs.
Finally, I have come to understand that recruitment is not just about filling a job, but it is also about helping people to find their dream job, and for clients to find their dream employees. It is a fulfilling and rewarding job when done well.
In conclusion, my first year in recruitment has been a rollercoaster of emotions, but I am excited to continue to learn and grow in my role. Clear communication, building relationships, adaptability, industry knowledge, and the passion for helping people to find the right job are essential for success in recruitment.

Starting a new job in a new industry gave me a sense of excitement, uncertainty and eagerness to learn. Coming into the role as a recruitment consultant at Optimum Consulting, my basic understanding of recruitment was “finding people a job”, and whilst that may be a very vague part of the job, I’ve quickly understood that there is much more to it. Eight weeks ago, I started a new career in recruitment after 11 years as a legal assistant. What led me here was not a sudden epiphany. It was a nearly 12-month-long job search that allowed me to experience firsthand what candidates say is broken about the process. As a candidate, I felt invisible more times […]
Well, I am sure you are all glued to the TV watching the Australian Tennis Open or if you are one of the lucky ones and living in Melbourne, or have tickets you may have been to a game or two over the last couple of weeks. At first glance, recruitment might look more like […]
Business is built on relationships: from customers, strategic partnerships to relationships between sales and operations, we all know collaboration is a holy grail aspiration, we all know that people work for people and the relationship between employee and manager is a key engagement driver. But as we head into 2026 and beyond a new(ish) relationship […]
