Well, we are already at the end of February and after two months back at work people are now starting to think “should I look for a new role?”
You’ve been on holidays. You have come back to the office and reality is – nothing has changed. So February/March are a great time to put your feelers out.
Nowadays, a lot of large organisations use artificial intelligence (AI) to work out who they would like to interview. So creating a resume that is enhanced for AI processing can be a powerful tool in your job search.
I have put down a few ideas below that I think will help you write a resume that is easily readable by AI and increases your chances of being selected for an interview.
Tip #1 Choose a clear and easy format
AI algorithms are designed to read uncomplicated and well-structured documents. I would avoid using complex layouts or graphics that could confuse the AI system. Instead, just choose a simple format with clear headings, bullet points, and straightforward language.
Tip #2 Focus on keywords
AI algorithms scan resumes for specific keywords related to the job you are applying for. Make sure to include relevant keywords in your resume, such as your qualifications, skills, and experience. For example, if you are applying for an Assistant Accountant role and they are asking for reconciliations/journals/accruals and SAP system and you have done this, make sure you use those exact words as this will help the AI system match you with the right job opportunities.
Another key point would be to use industry-specific terminology. For example, if you are applying for a Human Resources (HR) Manager role and the client is looking for HR Metrics and a new Human Resources Information System (HRIS) to implement, (which you have previously done), use this terminology in your resume as this demonstrates an understanding of the field.
Tip #3 Keep it concise
Do not have long winded paragraphs or 10-page resumes. AI algorithms are designed to process large amounts of data quickly, so, in my humble opinion the more concise your resume is, the better. I would look at between one and four pages.
Tip #4 Tailor your resume to each job you are applying for
If you customise your resume to emphasize your skills and experience for that role, it makes it easier for the AI system to understand how your qualifications and background are the right fit for the role.
Tip #5 Have a clear job objective or description
Finally, I suggest you have a clear statement at the top of your resume that demonstrates the role you are looking for, the type of industries you have worked in, and your main skill sets. This will help the AI algorithm understand what you are exactly looking for in your next opportunity.
All being well, by following these tips, you can create a resume that is ready for AI processing and increases your likelihood to secure an interview.
Remember a well-written resume is just one part of your job search. There are many other factors once you get that first call that you need to take into account, but, I will leave those until another time.
