We would all love to have successful careers and the first most critical step to attaining this is enjoying what you do.
As the famous saying goes,
“Find a job you enjoy doing, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” ― Mark Twain
I started my career as an Accountant. Whilst I enjoyed it, looking back I wasn’t really passionate about it. I always enjoyed being around people; interacting with them, helping them, so when an opportunity presented itself in Accounting Recruitment, I thought “Why Not” and twenty-five years later, I am still in this career and have never looked back.
I have learnt that the key to a successful career is having a passion for it, pursuing it and working hard. It is also important to develop habits and skills that make you more effective at work.
Here are some of my tips to help set you up to be more productive and successful:
- Be open to learning. There is always something new to learn and although sometimes it is daunting, taking yourself outside of your comfort zone will help you progress your career.
- Choose a career that you are interested in and that matches your personality. If you are passionate about it, you are more likely to succeed.
- Treat and care for your work/company as if it was your own business
- Understand what is expected of you in your role and make sure your values align with the business
- Show consistency in your work ethic; work hard and be focussed
- Challenge yourself but also be a team player
- Be a good listener
- Have a positive attitude
- Limit distractions
- Stay organised and manage your time well
- Be committed
- Produce high quality work that you are proud of
- Always be willing to go above and beyond
- Learn from your mistakes
And most importantly, we spend so much time at work so enjoy it – smile and have fun!

Starting a new job in a new industry gave me a sense of excitement, uncertainty and eagerness to learn. Coming into the role as a recruitment consultant at Optimum Consulting, my basic understanding of recruitment was “finding people a job”, and whilst that may be a very vague part of the job, I’ve quickly understood that there is much more to it. Eight weeks ago, I started a new career in recruitment after 11 years as a legal assistant. What led me here was not a sudden epiphany. It was a nearly 12-month-long job search that allowed me to experience firsthand what candidates say is broken about the process. As a candidate, I felt invisible more times […]
Well, I am sure you are all glued to the TV watching the Australian Tennis Open or if you are one of the lucky ones and living in Melbourne, or have tickets you may have been to a game or two over the last couple of weeks. At first glance, recruitment might look more like […]
Business is built on relationships: from customers, strategic partnerships to relationships between sales and operations, we all know collaboration is a holy grail aspiration, we all know that people work for people and the relationship between employee and manager is a key engagement driver. But as we head into 2026 and beyond a new(ish) relationship […]
