The Job Search Journey: Do Values Matter?

As we all know, looking for jobs can be a daunting and unpleasant experience for a number of reasons. Ranging from fierce competition within the talent pool, to time-consuming processes due to several stages involved.

On average an individual spends around 90,000 hours at work during their lifetime, and I believe we all want to spend this time at a company that reflects our values. Of course, not everyone has the luxury of finding a job that perfectly aligns with their values, and if that is the case, keep in mind it doesn’t always have to tick all the boxes; but it should at least be close. 

Nothing is more inconvenient than wasting your time looking for a job, if that job does not align with your values, which is why I urge everyone to choose at least three factors that are essential to them when considering a job opportunity, as this will save you from unnecessary hassles.

There are many factors to consider when choosing a job. Some of the most important factors include:

  • Salary: How much money do you need to make to support your lifestyle?
  • Work-life balance: How important is it to you to have a good work-life balance? Do you want a job with regular hours or are you open to working flexible hours?
  • Job security: How important is job security to you? Do you want a job with a lot of stability or are you willing to take on more risk?
  • Opportunities for advancement: Do you want a job that offers opportunities for advancement? If so, how important is it to you to have a clear path for advancement?
  • Chance to make a difference in the world: How important is it to you to have a job that makes a difference in the world?

Here are a few tips:

Do your research. 

Before you start applying for jobs, take some time to think about your values and what is important to you. Then, research companies and organizations that share your values.

Ask questions during interviews. 

When you are interviewing for a job, be sure to ask questions about the company’s values, culture and other things of importance to you. This will help you get a sense of whether the company is a good fit for you.

Be open to compromise.

If you can’t find a job that perfectly aligns with your values, be willing to compromise on some things. For example, you might be willing to work for a company that doesn’t share all your values if the company is doing exceptional work in other areas.

Remember, choosing a job that aligns with your values is important for your happiness, overall sense of belonging and success. By following these tips, you can increase your chances of finding a job that is a good fit for you.
