This year was the first time I went back to Greece in fifteen years, for my friend’s wedding. Had I not have had the wedding, I most likely wouldn’t have gone, putting it off for another year, then another I’m sure.

To say I am structured and planned in my life is an understatement. But, for some reason when it comes to booking annual leave, I am completely disorganised; I always leave it to the end of the year to take a good break at Christmas.

There are so many benefits of taking annual leave and, like exercise, I think it really helps you to be more productive in the workplace.

I had a fantastic three week break – no phone calls and no access to emails. I really wasn’t used to it at all. Most of the time when I take leave I stay local so I am always accessible by phone or email, so I was out of my comfort zone being overseas and much less accessible.

When you take time away from the stresses of work and daily life, it can improve your physical and mental health, motivation, relationships, job performance and perspective. A vacation can help you feel refreshed and more prepared to handle whatever comes when you return. I encourage you all to book yourself some annual leave now and have something to look forward to!

Benefits include:

  1. Greater productivity – employees that take regular annual leave breaks are more productive in the workplace
  2. Improved Social Life – by taking regular breaks throughout the year, we are less tired throughout the year and more inclined to put energy and effort into forging better relationships with partners, family and friends
  3. Reduced levels of stress
  4. Improved mood levels
  5. Better sleep patterns
  6. Help to keep your mind calm

Here are some top tips to make sure you take valuable time away from work:

  • Commit yourself to a break by booking holidays in advance, whether you go away or stay at home
  • Have a list of things you would like to do or achieve during that time
  • Plan to meet up with friends and family
  • Give your colleagues a detailed handover before you leave so you know you won’t return to chaos

Now is the time to be booking your next holiday! Not only something to look forward to but lifetime memories will be made, and you will reap all the benefits!
