I spent my birthday weekend doing what I love most, riding my motorcycle through the mountains around Brisbane. And there’s nothing that clears your head like a motorbike can. The sound of the engine, the cool air as you climb higher, the sharp focus it takes to read every bend and curve… it’s a mix of freedom, risk and precision that goes unmatched.
Now that I’m back in the office, way from the winding roads and mountain views, I can’t help but notice how many elements of riding are mirrored in recruitment.
Preparation is everything
Before a spirited ride through the twisties, I do my checks: tyres, fuel, brakes, the lot. It’s not the fun part, but it goes a long way to make sure the rest of the ride is.
Recruitment works the same way. The best results always come from solid preparation.
For hiring managers, that means taking time to really define what success in the role looks like and what kind of person is going to lead to that success. For candidates, it’s about knowing your story; your skills, your strengths, what you want next. When both sides put in the groundwork, the ride ahead tends to be a lot smoother.
You can’t predict every bend
Even when the road looks perfect, you never really know what’s around the corner, a patch of gravel, a fallen branch, or a wet patch of road.
The job market isn’t so different. Things change fast: business priorities shift, candidates reconsider their options, new skills become in demand overnight.
The trick is to stay flexible and responsive. You might have a plan, but you need to be ready to react quickly and appropriately when things change.
Trust is critical
When you’re on the bike, you have to trust yourself, your machine, and your ability to handle what comes your way. In recruitment, trust is just as important.
When hiring managers and recruiters work in sync; with open communication and mutual respect, the process just flows. The same goes for candidates who trust their recruiter to guide them honestly. That partnership is what helps everyone reach their destination safely (and ideally, will a smile on their face at the end of the journey).
Don’t forget to enjoy it
It’s easy to get caught up in the next deadline, the next hire, the next career move… but sometimes it’s worth taking a breath and appreciating the journey. Whether it’s helping someone land their dream role or watching a business grow thanks to the right hire, those moments are why I love what I do.
Riding, like recruitment, is all about balance; between focus and freedom, planning and adaptability, persistence and patience.
And when it all comes together… it’s one amazing ride.

I’ve always loved this time of year in Asia. There’s an energy that’s hard to describe unless you’ve experienced it firsthand – the build-up of anticipation, the spring cleaning and new sheets, the red and gold, the ang bao and the yusheng. I’ve been fortunate to experience Lunar New Year in Singapore, Bangkok, Ho Chi […]
In today’s workplace, busyness is often worn as a badge of honour. Full calendars, constant connectivity, and rapid responsiveness are commonly equated with effectiveness. But an important question remains: does being busy actually make us more productive? Busyness vs Productivity Busyness and productivity are not synonymous. Activity alone does not guarantee outcomes. Many professionals spend […]
For a long time, qualifications were the shorthand for capability. Degrees and certifications dominated job ads and hiring decisions. Today, I have found this appears to be changing. Many of my friends are now graduating from their degrees, and asking themselves what to do next? Do they continue to gain qualifications and continue studying? Do […]
